Tebow takes home Heisman Trophy
NEW
YORK - Tim Tebow took a few deep breaths, steadied
himself, then plowed through his Heisman Trophy
acceptance speech much the same way he takes on tacklers
— fast and furious.
In rapid fire, Florida’s sophomore quarterback thanked
everyone he could think of, some of them twice. When it
came time to take hold of the 25-pound bronze statue, he
looked as if he wasn’t sure whether he should run with
the prize or throw it. He does both so well.
Florida’s folk-hero quarterback with the rugged running
style and magnetic personality became the first
sophomore to win the Heisman on Saturday night.
“I am fortunate, fortunate for a lot of things,” Tebow
said. “God truly blessed me and this just adds on. It’s
an honor. I’m so happy to be here.”
Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow, Sophomore
Quarterback for the Florida Gators, Is the First
Home schooled Athlete to Win the Heisman (and first
sophomore). Doctors had Recommended to Tim Tebow's
Mother that she Abort Tim.
The home schooled movement this week was especially proud
of one of their own as the first home schooler (and first
sophomore) won the Heisman Trophy as the nation's
outstanding college football player. Tim Tebow, the
outstanding quarterback for the Florida Gators, and his
siblings were home schooled by his Christian missionary
parents. Florida is one of the states which allows
home schooled students to participate in their local
public schools' athletic programs.
Tim Tebow was born in the Philippines and he returns
there in the summers to preach and to do charity work.
His mother had fallen into a coma in the Philippines
after drinking contaminated water and got amoebic
dysentery. Then Mrs. Tebow received certain medications
during her pregnancy and her physicians told her that
her unborn baby was irreversibly damaged. She refused to
abort her child and Tim Tebow was born, and the rest is
history.
Mrs. Pam Tebow said, "We taught our children from a
young age that in everything, you give thanks to the
Lord. There's something supernatural that takes place
when you trade your anxieties for God's peace." Christy
Tebow-Allen, who is Tim's eldest sister and who works as
a missionary in Asia said just before Tim Tebow's
winning the Heisman Trophy, "I am not surprised that
Timmy is a finalist for the Heisman. The combination of
Timmy's God-given talent, hard work, character and
leadership have made a mark on and off the football
field."
